World Day Against Child Labour (WDACL). FAO-ILO joint event: “End Child Labour”, 12 June 2009

18/06/2009

218 million children under 18 years of age are involved in child labour. 70% of them -more than 150 million - are working in agriculture, where children comprise a third of the workforce.

On the occasion of the World Day Against Child Labour (WDACL) 2009, a joint event was organized by FAO (ESW) and ILO at FAO headquarters, in Rome, to share relevant information and thoughts to address the challenge to eliminate child labour in agriculture.

Mr. Furio Rosati from Understanding Children’s Work, an Inter-Agency Research Cooperation Project on Child Labour, gave a speech on the impact of the global financial crisis on child labour.

During the event participants had the opportunity to watch the film “Child labour in agriculture: The challenge to make chocolate child labour free” (ILO 2008 and to share their reflections about the 2009 ILO focus and FAO priorities.
