In Uganda, helping farmers harvest hope for the future

At the Save Food for a Better World seminar held in early November, FAO noted that a quarter of the food wasted globally could feed 870 million hungry people. Rosa S. Rolle, an FAO senior agro-industries and post-harvest officer, reported that waste is increasing in developing countries, although most leftover food is still in developed countries.

NTUC FairPrice
The retail cooperative NTUC FairPrice in Singapore announced that it will start applying its new framework for addressing food waste early next year. Actions will include enhancing and implementing internal processes that are “preventive in nature”, and engaging NTUC FairPrice customers in awareness-raising on food waste. Read more...

Bocconi University

Bocconi University, Milan, Italy has launched an international student competition on saving food, in collaboration with Expo2015, the Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forest Policies and the European Commission, and under the patronage of the United Nations for Expo, FAO and WFP.

The Sustainability Maker Project has launched a global-level open innovation platform called Innonatives to foster collaborative innovation and projects that promote sustainability.


OzHarvest

OzHarvest in partnership with UNEP & Climate Action is taking the message of stopping global food waste to the international stage at this year’s Sustainable Innovation Forum (SIF) in Lima, Peru, following the recent release of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) report on Global Food Losses and Food Waste.

University of Greenwich

The three-year project Gratitude (Gains from Losses of Root and Tuber Crops) – led by the Natural Resources Institute of the University of Greenwich, London, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, in collaboration with 15 other organizations – came to an end in November. The project aimed to find ways of reducing waste from post-harvest losses of root and tuber crops while turning unavoidable waste into something of value.


Wilson Associates International LLC

The World Food Preservation CenterTM LLC, in cooperation with the “Sister” Universities of the World Food Preservation CenterTM LLC, has set out to address the shortcomings in current approaches to reducing post-harvest losses of food in developing countries.
