For this year’s World Food Day (16 October 2015), the United Nations Secretary-General emphasized the scale of food waste and loss, estimated at about a third of all the food produced globally. “People everywhere know that waste is a disgrace”, he said. Commending both the Charter of Milan and Expo Milano’s food-centred theme, FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva added that people can celebrate World Food Day by making “personal commitments, for instance to eat healthily, cut food waste and help others”. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently set an ambitious national goal to reduce food waste by 50 percent by 2030. The Milan Urban Food Policy Pact aims to build more resilient food systems and curb food waste. Through the agreement, cities adhere to four principles: guaranteeing healthy food for all; promoting sustainability in the food system; educating the public about healthy eating; and reducing waste. The third edition of the Food Processing and Packaging Exposyum (FPPE) is taking place at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, Kenya from 3 to 5 November. Adequate processing and packaging solutions are key to fighting food losses, particularly in sub-Saharan countries, where losses are often caused by a lack of suitable means of processing, storing and transporting harvested produce. The successful staging of the First International Post-Harvest Loss Congress by the ADM Institute on Post-harvest Loss Reduction (University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign) in association with the Rockefeller Foundation and SAVE FOOD, brought over agricultural 300 professionals from 62 countries to Rome, Italy to discuss post-harvest loss reduction. The Community of Practice (CoP) on Food Loss Reduction (FLR) is launching a new forum discussion and asks members to rank the following six potential topics in order of preference: 1. Policy development and influence on post-harvest management (PHM) and FLR. 2. PHM business models: what works, what does not work, in what contexts? 3. Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of post-harvest losses (M&E framework, indicators, implementation plans, quantitative and qualitative approaches). 4. Best practices for gender-sensitive PHM/FLR. 5. Innovative technologies for PHM/FLR. 6. PHM/FLR training for the sharing and discussion of technology, knowledge and approaches, awareness raising, and the development of marketing materials to facilitate dissemination and use of relevant training material. Survey findings indicate that date marking (with “use by” and “best before” dates) is poorly understood by Europeans. Fewer than half (47 percent) of respondents understood what “best before” meant, and only 40 percent knew the meaning of “use by”. The study confirms the need to disseminate targeted information and educational initiatives on date marking, taking into account the levels of understanding and information needs of different consumer groups in European Union (EU) countries. Partners' actions


On the occasion of the European Week for Waste Reductions 2015 (EWWR), the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) decided to raise awareness among the staff of the dramatic issue of food waste. The programme for this year includes several activities such as a photo competition on the thematic of food waste and a film projection on the same issue.

FELCOS

From 21 to 22 October 2015, in Milan (at Expo Milano) “Don’t Waste Our Future!” hosted the 1st European Youths' Forum against Food Waste and for New Models of Responsible Consumption. SAVEFOOD contributed to the technical and policy debate. The forum was funded by the European Union within the framework of the 2015 European Year for Development.


Food for All Ghana

To commemorate World Food Day, on 16 October, the Food for All Ghana campaign, in collaboration with the Matic Foundation, attempted the Guinness world record for the longest table in the world. With Dr Joe Beasley, a civil rights activist and founder of the Joe Beasley Foundation in Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America, as its guest of honour, the event brought together passionate volunteers and partners to construct a table of 1 600 m in length on Oxford Street in Oso, Accra.


Global FoodBanking

The Global FoodBanking Network (GFN) supports the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals and participated in several General Assembly side-events in New York to show its support for the Sustainable Development Goals, several of which are aligned with GFN’s mission.


World Food Preservation Center® LLC

The World Food Preservation Center LLC is pleased to announce that University of Lisbon in Portugal has joined its worldwide consortium of thirteen “sister” universities and the ARO Volcani Center in Israel to reduce post-harvest food losses in developing countries and diminish world hunger.
