Joint Workshop on Integrated Fire Management and Post-Fire Restoration

The Workshop on Integrated Fire Management: Good Practices and Knowledge Sharing in the Near East and Mediterranean countries will be held from 12 to 15 February 2025 in Rabat, Morocco. Organized by Silva Mediterranea and FAO’s Regional Office for the Near East and North Africa (FAO RNE), in collaboration with the National Agency of Water and Forestry of Morocco, the event will bring together key stakeholders to enhance regional collaboration and knowledge exchange.

In the framework of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030) and its targeted support for the Mediterranean region to capitalize good practices on post-fire restoration, and the Near East Network on Wildland Forest Fires (NENFIRE), the workshop will focus on building capacities in fire management and post-fire restoration, giving participants the opportunity to review of the NENFIRE Five-Year Roadmap for Integrated Fire Management (2024–2029) and to share best practices for managing and restoring fire-affected landscapes, including a visit to showcase Morocco’s advancements in post-fire restoration.

The agenda will include:

  • Introduction to the UN decade on ecosystem restoration;
  • Post-fire ecosystem restoration;
  • Overview of post-fire ecosystem dynamics;
  • Role of forest genetic resources (FGR) in post-fire restoration;
  • Cross-learning - Integrated fire management (IFM) best practices;
  • Country presentations;
  • Survey review and validation;
  • Needs assessment and open discussion; and
  • Decision-making challenges in post-fire restoration.
