Hybrid Event, 04/03/2025

On the sidelines of the 56th session of the United Nations Statistical Commission, FAO, in collaboration with UNICEF and WHO, hosted a side event titled “Latest Initiatives in the Domain of Food Security and Nutrition (FSN) Statistics and the new UN Expert Group on FSN data and statistics” on Tuesday, 4 March 2025 from 09.00 to 10.15 AM New York Time (15.00–16.15 Rome Time). The event took place in a hybrid format, at UNICEF House and online.

FAO, UNICEF and WHO propose to establish a new UN Expert Group on Food Security and Nutrition (FSN) data and statistics, following the creation of the new statistical domain on FSN at the 55th session of the UN Statistical Commission last year. This group will bring together experts from national statistical offices, international organizations, and key partners to strengthen FSN data collection, address gaps, and improve global coordination.

Objectives of the meeting

 This Statistical Commission side event, organized by FAO, UNICEF and WHO, aimed to:

  • Provide more detail and illustrate with concrete examples some of the recent initiatives in the sphere of FSN data and statistics;
  • Discuss the creation of the new expert group on FSN data and statistics, and provide views and ideas on its objectives, membership and working modalities, and how best to engage and shape the programme of work with all stakeholders;
  • Discuss challenges faced by national, regional and international statistical authorities on food security and nutrition data and statistics as well as emerging topics in this area that could be prioritized by the new expert group

 Target Audience
