FAOSTAT released new data on agricultural production. The agricultural production domain covers data on crop and livestock commodities from production volumes to harvested areas and animal slaughtering rates up to 2024. In addition, data for selected processed crop and livestock products, synchronized and derived from the Food Balance Sheets domain, are also available up to 2023.

Main findings:

  • The global harvested area of the main primary crops reached 1.5 billion hectares in 2024, up 197 million hectares from 2010. Oil crops, and roots and tubers exhibited the largest increases.
  • Oil crops also showed the largest production increase between 2010 and 2024 (+50 percent), to 1.2 billion tonnes (Gt). Oil palm fruit production increased by 77 percent and soya beans by 50 percent, driven mainly by area expansions.
  • The global cereals production increased by 27 percent between 2010 and 2024 to 3.1 Gt, mainly due to yield improvements.
  • Sugar crop output increased by 17 percent from 2010 to 2024, reaching 2.2 Gt in 2024 even though it declined significantly between 2023 and 2024.
  • World meat production reached 374 million tonnes (Mt) in 2024, up 7 Mt from 2023. Chicken, pig and cattle meat were the most produced items worldwide, with the three largest producers in Asia and the Americas.
  • The global milk production was 985 Mt in 2024, of which 81 percent (797 Mt) was cattle milk.
  • World eggs production was 100 Mt in 2024, of which 94 percent was hen eggs.
