Agriculture and Livestock Value Chain project (ALIVE) to Refugees and Host Communities in Eastern Sudan.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Representative to Sudan Babagana Ahmadu, Resident accompanied by the Director of the Organization’s Office in Kassala, Mrs. Aisha Oshiek, visited the dairy factories of Khashm El- Qirba - Kassala State, where Ahmadu met HE the Acting Wali of Kassala State, Mr. Adel Alloub and members of his government, and the meeting discussed the efforts made within the framework of The Value Chains Project for Agricultural and Livestock Products for Refugees and Host Communities in Eastern Sudan, and they discussed ways to overcome the difficulties facing the Khashm El- Qirba Dairy Factory Project and the 26 Kilo Dairy Factory.

The Agriculture and Livestock Value Chain (ALIVE) project is part of the promotion of sustainable rural livelihoods for refugees and host communities in Eastern Sudan that aims to contribute to the self-reliance of refugees in six refugee camps (Kilo 26, Al Shegarab, Abbouda, Um Gargour, Disrefi and Qirba). ) and the surrounding host communities in eastern Sudan. This will be achieved by promoting sustainable livelihood strategies to organize and link the potential of refugees and the host community with a special focus on the poor (those who need support to make a difference in their living standards) and middle-income groups in accordance with the targeting and graduation model established by UNHCR and Parliament.

The project is aligned with the overall strategy of the Government of Sudan on poverty reduction, inclusive growth and sustainable livelihoods through the provision of life-saving comprehensive nutrition services and ensuring rural food security.

The project will also contribute to UNDAF Pillar 1 “Poverty Reduction, Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Livelihoods”; With special attention given to youth, women and populations in need, they have improved opportunities for decent work and sustainable livelihoods and are better protected from external shocks, thus reducing poverty.

During an inspection of the workflow of the dairy factory (kilo 26) and the Khashm al-Qirba dairy factory, Ahmadu urged everyone to finish the production line processing operations as soon as possible, and explained to the attendees the contribution and importance of this project in improving the living conditions of local communities.

At the end of the visit, Babagana Ahmadu and the director of the organization’s office in Kassala state held a meeting with representatives of dairy associations and enlightened them about the importance of the project and its ability to effectively contribute to improving the conditions of local communities.
