Sudan Land Cover Mapping

Technical awareness workshop 9 March 2011
Remote Sensing Authority , 09/03/2011 - SIFSIA is supporting the update of Sudan land cover digital geo-referenced database, which will provide the information to support food security policies, and for its importance in providing information for analysis and decision making in several sectors, among them agriculture, forest & rangeland monitoring, environmental planning, biodiversity studies, watershed catchments management, etc... Technical awareness workshop was held at the Remote Sensing Authority (RSA) on 9th March, to raise the awareness of the Land Cover mapping products, and to shed light on the current status & next steps of the project. This was presented by Mr. John Latham, FAO – NRL Rome. All institutions and agencies are invited to support the ongoing process at any stage, and to avoid duplication of efforts. In this respect, we acknowledge the generous support of GMFS/ EFTAS, the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), and IFAD for providing high resolution imagery over different areas.

As you may know that SIFSIA is supporting the update of Sudan land cover digital geo-referenced database, which will provide the information to support food security policies, and for its importance in providing information for analysis and decision making in several sectors, among them agriculture, forest & rangeland monitoring, environmental planning, biodiversity studies, watershed catchments management, etc...

The project is implemented with technical backstopping from FAO, and in collaboration with Ministry of agriculture, Remote Sensing Authority (RSA), Forests National Corporation (FNC), and wide range of relevant stakeholders and line-ministries.

The process will be divided in three main phases:

  1. Image Interpretation and Classification (March-June 2011): at RSA facilities;
  2. Field Verification (June – July 2011): teams, led by FNC, will be deployed to the field to verify the classification results of (phase 1) on number of selected locations in all the states.
  3. Dissemination and Uptake (towards October 2011): dissemination the results, and training users from stakeholders' institutions.

With this background, a Technical awareness workshop was held at RSA on 9th March, to raise the awareness of the Land Cover mapping products, and to shed light on the current status & next steps of the project. This was presented by Mr. John Latham, FAO – NRL Rome, (PPTs attached) and mainly highlighted the following points:

  • Global Land Cover Network Initiative and Land Cover Classification System (LCCS)
  • GLCN tools
  • AFRICOVER project (1998 – 2004)
  • Examples of land cover changes assessments, area frame analysis in Ethiopia, Woody Biomass Assessment: Tanzania, Soil Carbon Gap, etc...
  • Recent Land Cover Mapping and Wood Energy Analysis of Darfur’s IDP region. Conducted in 2010, report available at SIFSIA webpage (http://www.fao.org/fileadmin/user_upload/sifsia/docs/Darfur_WISDOM_Report_Jan2011.pdf) and a summary report enclosed.
  • LRIMS – Land Resources Information Management System and its recent application in Libya and potential benefit in Sudan as a follow up to the Land Cover mapping.
  • Overview of the current Land Cover update project for Sudan:
    • Overview of the interpretation activities final workshop no later than October 2011;
    • Interpretation status and plan (interpretation is conducted simultaneously in Khartoum at RSA (Kordofan region), Egypt (Northern Sudan), FAO (Rome & Florence (Darfur –completed-) + (Gezira, White Nile, Gedarif, Sinnar, Kassala, Blue Nile States)
    • Training module;

All institutions and agencies are invited to support the ongoing process at any stage, and to avoid duplication of efforts. In this respect, we acknowledge the generous support of GMFS/ EFTAS, the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), and IFAD for providing high resolution imageries over different areas.
