FAO Delivers Regional Training on the Degree of Urbanization (DEGURBA) Methodology in Tunisia

Hammamet (Tunisia), 21/11/2025 - 22/11/2025

As part of its ongoing support to strengthen national statistical capacities, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) organized a regional technical workshop in Hammamet on 21 and 22 November. The training brought together representatives from the National Statistical Offices of Burkina Faso, Niger, and Côte d’Ivoire to enhance their skills in applying the Degree of Urbanization (DEGURBA) methodology.

DEGURBA is an internationally harmonized approach used to classify areas as urban, semi-urban, or rural based on population size and density. It contributes to more accurate and comparable statistics across countries and supports evidence-based policymaking in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Expected Outputs:

  • Strengthened technical capacity to apply the DEGURBA methodology using population grids, R scripts, and GHSL tools.
  • Improved understanding of how to integrate DEGURBA classifications into national statistical systems.
  • Refreshed skills in conducting Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) data analysis using the updated Shiny App.
  • Enhanced readiness to generate harmonized urban–rural disaggregation for key national indicators, including FIES.

Participants:

The workshop was attended by six participants representing the National Statistical Offices of Burkina Faso, Niger, and Côte d’Ivoire, all actively engaged in data production and analysis related to territorial classifications and food security.
