FAO at the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development 2025: Goal 8 – Decent work and economic growth

03/04/2025 , Santiago

Luiz Bedusch, FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, delivered an statement at the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development 2025 panel on "Goal 8 – Decent work and economic growth".

Transforming agrifood systems is essential for advancing SDG 8, particularly in generating decent employment and inclusive economic growth in Latin America and the Caribbean. Agrifood systems are a major source of livelihoods—especially for youth and rural populations—and offer opportunities to address structural vulnerabilities through targeted investments and inclusive policies.

Youth engagement in agrifood systems is critical for future economic growth. Supporting youth through modern agricultural education, work-based learning, and youth-led agribusiness initiatives can unlock their potential and drive transformation. Integrating nutrition into these strategies is also essential, as malnutrition reduces productivity and increases healthcare costs.

Barriers to decent employment, particularly for rural youth and young women, must be addressed through inclusive labour market policies, social protection systems, and gender-sensitive programs. Empowering youth through mentorship, peer networks, and access to finance fosters agency and resilience, while employment-intensive initiatives in fragile contexts can enhance economic stability.

Child labour, especially in agriculture, remains a pressing concern. Achieving SDG target 8.7 requires transforming agrifood systems, strengthening policy implementation, and promoting safe agricultural practices that prevent child labour and provide youth with decent work alternatives.

Migrant workers are vital to agrifood systems, yet often face exploitation. Ensuring safe, regular migration pathways and fair working conditions, including adequate housing, occupational safety, and access to justice, is essential for protecting their rights.

Financial inclusion is another key enabler of economic empowerment. Youth-friendly financial services, fintech solutions, and regulatory support can facilitate entrepreneurship and inclusive rural development. Despite progress, urban-rural and gender gaps persist.

Institutionalizing youth voices in policy processes, fostering cooperatives, and building multi-stakeholder partnerships are essential for creating inclusive, resilient economies and ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of decent work for all.
