The Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD) is an annual, inclusive intergovernmental forum to support follow-up and review of progress on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the regional level.

The Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development 2026 took place from 24–27 February 2026 under the theme: “Transformative, equitable, innovative and coordinated actions for the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs for a sustainable future for all”, in Bangkok, Thailand.

In alignment with the focus of the 2026 High-Level Political Forum, the Forum assessed progress on the following SDGs:

SDG 6 - Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all

SDG 7 - Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all

SDG 9  - Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation

SDG 11 - Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

SDG 17 - Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for   Sustainable Development.

Transformative, equitable, innovative, and coordinated actions for the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals for a sustainable future for all

Addressing the Forum on this agenda point, FAO underscored that transforming agrifood systems is a practical and high impact entry point for accelerating the 2030 Agenda across Asia and the Pacific. FAO highlighted its support to Members in moving from commitments to delivery through coordinated policy support, evidence generation, partnerships and investment facilitation.

SDG round tables

FAO experts participated in round table discussions on the SDGs under reviews, highlighting the role of agrifood systems transformation in advancing the SDG and key priority areas for action.

It is necessary to scale-up sustainable water management in agriculture, which accounts for 72 percent of global freshwater withdrawals, to meet rising food, feed and fibre demands.  By increasing water efficiency, reducing environmental negative impacts on freshwater and reusing wastewater, agriculture holds the key solutions for the global water crisis.

Producing the world’s food and getting it from farm to fork accounts for around 30 percent of global energy consumption, while one-third of agrifood-system GHG emissions are linked to energy use. Delivering on SDG7 targets requires scaling renewable energy in agrifood systems towards a more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agricultural sector. Energy-smart agrifood systems expand energy access, reduce emissions, improve resilience and productivity, while advancing food security and climate goals. Integrating agrifood system solutions into climate policies is also vital to achieve SDG7.

Advancing SDG 9 through agrifood systems transformation means promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization in rural areas by strengthening agro-industrial value chains, local manufacturing and MSME-driven service ecosystems that create value-added and decent jobs, especially for women and youth. It requires deploying integrated technology solutions, including Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization and circular economy approaches, while closing infrastructure, digital and finance gaps so smallholders and rural enterprises can invest, innovate and participate meaningfully in resilient, inclusive value chains.

Advancing SDG 11 through agrifood systems transformation requires integrating agrifood systems into National Urban Policies and city/territorial plans to build greener, healthier and more resilient cities. It involves the use of procurement and market instruments to improve access to affordable healthy diets, aligning mandates, policies and financing across local and national levels, investing in city-region diagnostics and disaggregated data systems to identify bottlenecks, manage trade-offs and target and guide investment, and mobilizing partnerships among city networks, governments, UN agencies and financiers around practical implementation pathways and sustainable financing.

Co-organized by FAO together with the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub in collaboration with Milan Urban Food Policy Pact, RIKOLTO and Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), this side event explored how city-region approaches can connect food production, processing, logistics, consumption and waste management with urban planning and development. By strengthening links between municipalities, national governments and food systems stakeholders, the session highlighted how coordinated action can advance more inclusive, resilient and resource-efficient cities – supporting progress on SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) while generating co-benefits across food security, climate and livelihoods.

The 4th Asia Pacific Food Systems Transformation Meeting brought together countries and regional partners to advance implementation of national food systems pathways following the UN Food Systems Summit +4 Stocktake (UNFSS+4). The meeting provided a regional space to review progress, align priorities, and strengthen coordinated support for food systems transformation toward 2030.

The meeting was organized by the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub in cooperation with the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (FAO RAP), UNESCAP, and the Regional Networking Group on Food Systems and will be supported by several other agencies.
