Workshop on Sustainable Value Chains for Sustainable Food Systems, June 2016, Rome, Italy

08/06/2016 to 09/06/2016

As part of its contributions to the Ten-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns (10YFP), and with the support of Switzerland, FAO will organize a multi- stakeholder workshop on sustainable value chains for sustainable food systems on 8 and 9 June in Rome, Italy. The workshop will examine how the organization, functioning and governance of food value chains can contribute to the sustainability of food systems, with particular attention to environmental issues including resource-use efficiency and biodiversity, and economic and social issues including gender. It will consider resource use efficiency (energy, water, etc.), including potential uses of co-products and by-products and reduction of losses along food chains; how the organization of food value chains can improve sustainability and create opportunities for employment and income generation in rural areas, particularly for women; and technologies, tools and institutional and organizational arrangements – including legal instruments such as contracts – that can improve environmental, economic and social impacts. The workshop will build on and link to previous workshops on Voluntary Standards for Sustainable Food Systems: Challenges and Opportunities in 2013 and Knowledge and Information for Sustainable Food Systems in 2014, towards implementation of 10YFP, including through partnerships among partners of the programme. It aims to clarify the notion of “sustainable value chain”. For more information visit the website here.
