The first draft of this Paper was prepared for the Third Session of CIFA (1977) by the Fishery Industries Division, FAO Fisheries Department, on the basis of a preliminary study prepared by Messrs. P. Morissens and P. Lessent, of the Fisheries and Pisciculture Division, Centre Technique Forestier Tropical, Nogent-sur-Marne, France.
