REPORT ON UNSCHEDULED AND CANCELLED SESSIONS

(1 June 1995 - 31 December 1997)

In Resolution 21/67, adopted in November 1967, the Conference had authorized the Director-General to convene sessions of FAO bodies and expert consultations other than those approved in the Programme of Work and Budget (PWB), provided that such sessions be reported to the next Council session. Subsequently the Council agreed at its Hundred-and-Second Session (November 1992) that information on unscheduled and cancelled sessions should henceforward be provided in successive Programme Implementation Reports (PIR). The PIR 1994-95 reported on unscheduled and cancelled sessions covering the period from 1 June 1993 to 31 May 1995. This PIR reports on scheduled and cancelled sessions for the 1996-97 biennium and for the period from 1 June 1995 to 31 December 1995.

The starting point of reporting for the 1996-97 biennium is the revised list of scheduled sessions adopted by the Joint Meeting of the Seventy-fourth Programme Committee and the Eighty-fourth Finance Committee in May 1996 (PC 74/2-FC 84/4) which contained a reduction of 21 sessions compared to the list given in the supplement to the PWB 1996-97 (C 95/3-Sup.1).

The following data summarize the movements during the reporting period:

1 June - 31 December 1995 7 unscheduled
19 cancellations
1996-1997 39 unscheduled
56 cancellations

Details of these sessions are provided in the following pages which follow the format of previous reports. Meetings that have no inter-governmental character such as consultations of the FAO secretariat with stakeholders, as well as informal briefings of Permanent Representatives and non-FAO meetings held on FAO premises are not included in this list.
