The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Dubai Municipality have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance collaboration in agri-food systems, nutrition, and food safety and security. The agreement was formalized during the World Government Summit 2025, held in Dubai from 11 to 13 February.

The MoU was signed by Abdulhakim Elwaer, FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for the Near East and North Africa, and H.E. Eng. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality. The agreement establishes a framework for cooperation to promote sustainable food systems, improve food safety standards, and support school nutrition programs in Dubai. It also includes technical contributions to studies on food safety and security and the implementation of best practices in the emirate’s agri-food sector.

Elwaer emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating: “The signing of this MoU represents a key step in strengthening collaboration between FAO and the UAE in advancing sustainable agri-food systems and ensuring food security. This partnership will drive greater efficiency and resilience in food supply chains, while also promoting knowledge exchange to address environmental challenges.”

H.E. Eng. Marwan bin Ghalita highlighted Dubai Municipality’s commitment to enhancing food security, saying: “Food security and safety are strategic priorities for Dubai and the UAE, ensuring a high quality of life for our communities and a sustainable future for generations to come. Through this collaboration with FAO, we aim to establish a comprehensive, risk-free agri-food system that supports self-sufficiency and aligns with Dubai’s Food Security Strategy.”

The MoU also outlines collaboration on awareness campaigns promoting healthy food systems, technical support for events such as the World Food Safety Day and the Dubai International Food Safety Conference, and contributions to global initiatives like the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste.

Dubai Municipality plays a key role in managing environmental, health, and food safety systems across the emirate, ensuring sustainable resource management and proactive public health protection. Through this partnership, FAO and Dubai Municipality will work together to implement internationally recognized food safety standards and enhance the resilience of food supply chains in Dubai.
