The food supply of cities in Africa is changing under the triple effect of population growth, urbanization and changes in agricultural production and trade. These changes create risks: cities in Africa are increasingly facing the challenges of undernutrition and malnutrition. But they also create new opportunities: the food economy is the continent's primary source of employment and will remain so in the near future, both for agricultural production, agri-food processing and product distribution. At the center of this economy are market intermediaries, who act as a link between producers and consumers, and whose inefficiency explains why about a third of production evaporates into food losses. This AFD/World Bank book provides an in-depth analysis of the major shortcomings of these food distribution systems, based on the case of three cities: Rabat, Niamey and Abidjan.
