The Milan Urban Food Policy Pact celebrates its Fifth Anniversary

18/12/2020

This year marks the fifth anniversary of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact (MUFPP), launched by the city of Milan in 2015 to promote sustainable urban food systems and to which more than 200 cities, representing over 350 million people worldwide, are now members.

To celebrate the work of these five years, it was decided to replace the event of the 2020 MUFPP Global Forum - which due to the COVID-19 emergency could not be held in Mérida in Mexico, as planned - with an online event organized by the MUFPP Secretariat on the new dedicated website: milan2020.milanurbanfoodpolicypact.org.

The event opened with a message by the Mayor of Milan and Chair of the MUFPP Steering Committee Giuseppe Sala and the other representatives of the Committee, followed by a presentation of main actions to mitigate the effects of the pandemic on the food system. These actions ranged from food aid to citizens to the promotion of healthy diets, and food supply chain support implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic by the signatory cities.

In this context, and in line with the Urban Food Agenda mandate, FAO also delivered a Global Survey to more than 800 administrations (between April and May 2020) to assess the impact of COVID-19 in cities and the main responses from local governments.

Marcela Villarreal - Director of Partnership and UN Collaboration Division in FAO - has been one of the main panellists in the Online Ceremony, alongside the Vice Mayor of Milan responsible for the local Food Policy, Anna Scavuzzo, the Director of Scientific Research and Technology of Fondazione Cariplo, Carlo Mango, Gunhild A. Stordalen (Founder & Executive Chair EAT Foundation) and Thom Achterbosch (Senior Researcher Wageningen Economic Research). The closing remarks came from the Mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, who will host the MUFPP Global Forum in 2021.

Furthermore, thanks to the large participation by the signatory cities in the Milan Pact Talks 2020, the Municipality of Milan and Cariplo Foundation have decided to create and make available to cities a video-library of good practices implemented during the pandemic, with over 100 contributions from the signatory cities of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact which can be accessed on the new YouTube channel.
