The AfricanCITYFOODMonth Campaign
The inaugural #AfricanCITYFOODMonth campaign is organized by FAO and ICLEI - Africa with the support of RUAF, and it takes place from 1 to 31 July 2020. The initiative has been developed under the FAO Framework for the Urban Food Agenda and it highlights diverse, innovative and evolving African urban food systems. The campaign will provide a platform for insight, learning opportunities and support for local governments and food system stakeholders who are interested in shaping sustainable, nutritious and inclusive food systems. Cities, with their high population density, are particularly vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic and many cities in developing countries do not have adequate capacity to address the disruptions caused by the response to the health emergency. The risk is particularly high for the 1.2 billion people living in the congested and overcrowded informal urban settlements where conditions are already unsafe and unhealthy for human living. The FAO Framework for the Urban Food Agenda serves as a corporate strategy to address emerging calls from countries, responding to demands for a multi-sectoral, multi-stakeholder and multi-level approach to food insecurity and malnutrition across the rural-urban continuum. As a result of an inclusive consultative process the framework articulates guiding principles, purposes and targeted outcomes compatible with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda.
