Central America consolidates small-scale fishers network of indigenous peoples

Representatives of indigenous peoples of Costa Rica, Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua form the first Network of Small Scale Fishers of the Indigenous Peoples of Central America, with the support of the FAO, the Central American Indigenous Council (CICA) and the Fund for the Development of Indigenous Peoples (FILAC).

"Indigenous peoples inhabit and share vital links with aquatic ecosystems, which are an essential part of their cultural heritage, support food sovereignty, the right to access healthy and culturally appropriate foods and which are the main source of their family income" commented Octavio Ramírez, Coordinator of the FAO Representation in Costa Rica.
