Strengthening social protection for fishers and fish-farmers in Latin America and the Caribbean

19/09/2018 - 20/09/2018 Panama

Parliamentarians from 17 countries met in Panama in September for the IV Foro de Parlamentarios de la Pesca y la Acuicultura de América Latina y el Caribe. The forum was organized by the FAO in coordination with the Latin American parliament (PARLATINO), the Parliamentary Front Against Hunger (PFH) and the Panama National Assembly.

Among the topics discussed was how to put social protection in regional fisheries and aquaculture on the political agenda. One outcome was that the parliamentarians requested the PARLATINO and FAO to support them to analyze the possibility of working on a model law on social protection in the sectors. In this work, the SSF Guidelines will be valuable.
