WASAG – The Global Framework on Water Scarcity in Agriculture

The Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture funds WASAG

The Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG) has signed a funding agreement to support WASAG and its work for the next three years (2019-2022). This is a direct follow up on the recommendations of the last session of FAO’s Committee on Agriculture (COAG).

Established in 1971, the Committee on Agriculture (COAG) is FAO’s Governing Body providing overall policy and regulatory guidance on issues relating to agriculture, livestock, food safety, nutrition, rural development and natural resource management.  During its 26th Session in October 2018, 15 Member Nations of COAG explicitly highlighted the importance of WASAG.

Subsequently, the Committee on Agriculture endorsed and supported the Global Framework on Water Scarcity in Agriculture (WASAG) as a key coordination mechanism to adapt to the effects of water scarcity in agriculture in a changing climate both at national and global levels, in sustainable and inclusive manners.

For more information on the session, please read the document submitted to the 26th Session of the Committee on Agriculture (Rome, 1-5 October 2018).

The full summary of the 26th session of COAG on WASAG is in points 41 to 45 of the session’s report.
