World Water Day 2021 celebrates the different ways water benefits our lives and explores how we can value water properly and safeguard it effectively for everyone. This animation looks at how water means different things to different people.
Drought and Agriculture
To meet the Sustainable Development Goals, the world needs to move faster from a crisis-led response to a proactive approach that reduces impacts, builds resilience and allows people to cope with drought. The tools, systems and techniques are already available. FAO supports countries to increase resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises. Everyone has a role to play, from the policy to the community level to avoid drought becoming famines and to ensure no one is left behind.
One million cisterns for the Sahel (English / Français)
The Sahel region faces severe drought and desertification. Often, women have to walk 10 kilometers for water. FAO’s “1 million cisterns for the Sahel” project helps women and farmers harvest and store rainwater. The cisterns provide clean water for drinking and growing food to millions of people in arid areas.
