WASAG – The Global Framework on Water Scarcity in Agriculture

Webinar "Water Scarcity, Abundance of Women"

In collaboration with the Women for Water Partnership (WfWP), a WASAG Partner, this first webinar on mainstreaming Gender in Water Scarcity in Agriculture under the title: WATER SCARCITY, ABUNDANCE OF WOMEN? shared with nearly 200 participants how women can play a better role in managing water scarcity in agriculture.

"Women play a central role in the supply, management and safeguarding of water, we must make sure that women are not left behind" Ms Annemiek Jenniskens from Women for Water Partnership stated in the first webinar organized by The Global Framework on Water Scarcity in Agriculture (WASAG) hosted by the FAO Land and Water Division in collaboration with its Partners on May 12. This webinar, titled “Water Scarcity, an Abundance of Women?” tackled the vital topic of gender in water scarcity. 

This webinar welcomed nearly 200 participants from over 44 countries. Keynote speaker, Ms. Gerda Verburg, gave an inspiring talk on the importance of empowering women. She compelled participants to "Tell your stories, share your emotions and please continue to be champions for equality." Ms. Annemiek Jenniskens provided key information on how water scarcity can provide opportunities for women.  In a similar vein, Ms. Michela Miletto conferred the importance of disaggregated data for targeted gender-based efforts.

Ms Gerda Verburg - Coordinator of the Scaling Up Nutrition Movement 

Ms. Verburg has served women and the planet in a number of roles, including: Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the UN Organizations for Food and Agriculture in Rome, Chair of the Global Agenda Council for Food and Nutrition Security of the World Economic Forum (WEF), Chair of the UN Committee on World Food Security (CFS), speaker in the Dutch House of Representatives on economics, energy and innovation and as Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, as well as the Chair of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development.

Ms Annemiek Jenniskens - Women for Water Partnership 

Women, water, sustainable development have been key topics in her professional career during the past 40 years. She has been working in governmental settings as well as non-governmental settings in both leadership and advisory positions. Currently she is working for Women for Water Partnership.

Ms Michela  Miletto - acting Coordinator of the UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme 

Ms Michela Miletto is Coordinator Ad Interim at the World Water Assessment Programme of UNESCO. Besides the production of the annual World Water Development Reports,  she also leads the gender portfolio, supporting Member States to incorporate gender considerations into water policies with the collection and analysis of sex-disaggregated water data, through the WWAP Toolkit and gender-responsive indicators.
