Committee on Fisheries - 33rd Session

COFI33 - Developments in Combatting IUU Fishing

Iran Room (FAO Headquarters)
09.07.2018
 Rome time

Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing remains one of the greatest threats to marine ecosystems due to its potent ability to undermine national and regional efforts to manage fisheries sustainably as well as endeavours to conserve marine biodiversity. Fisheries resources available to bona fide fishers are poached in a ruthless manner by IUU fishing, often leading to the collapse of local fisheries, with small-scale fisheries in developing countries proving particularly vulnerable. However, action is being taken all over the globe to combat this IUU fishing. This side event will look to bring into light an overview of the various developments and initiatives that are being implemented worldwide to combat IUU fishing.
