The project aims to strengthen the supply of sustainably produced wood energy (fuelwood and charcoal) to Goma and surrounding cities, in order to contribute to sustainable development while reducing illegal logging in Virunga National Park, one of the last refuges for mountain gorillas in the Albertine Rift. During the period between 2007 and 2012, over 5,000 hectares of land reforested, 47,000 improved stoves distributed, and more than 100 “masters” trained for wood carbonization techniques.
