In December 2024, the WAW core team with the support of FAO Senegal, travelled to Kaffrine in Senegal to present the results of a farm survey conducted by the University of Sine Saloum (USSEIN) team and main findings of an analysis conducted by the WAW team.

USSEIN, in partnership with FAO Senegal, conducted a survey of urban and peri-urban agriculture in Kaffrine to understand agricultural diversity, inform policy and improve food security in the region, with the support of local authorities and organizations, as part of a broader initiative under the FAO Green Cities Initiative.

The workshop aimed to strengthen synergies between the various FAO projects and initiatives of other partners in this geographical area, with the mobilization and active contribution of local partners, in particular municipalities, farmers' organizations, the private sector and civil society organizations.

The mission explored the prospects for strengthening the data system on family farms and their various functions, practices and challenges in Senegal, and for better supporting the contribution of local agriculture to sustainable food systems and livelihoods in the context of population growth, urbanization and climate change pressures in terms of youth employment and equitable economic development.

The study on urban and peri-urban agriculture in Kaffrine, Senegal, was presented to donors, including international cooperation teams. It was then validated by local stakeholders during a one-day meeting to discuss typology, results and future plans.
