The methodological guide to reduce carbon and water footprints in banana plantations is now available

29/06/2018

To mitigate climate change, the WBF members contributing to WG01 produced a practical guide with a value-chain approach to reduce carbon and water footprints in banana plantations worldwide, including experiences from Costa Rica, leading country in GHG-emission reduction in the banana industry, aiming to replicate the lessons learned worldwide. The project aims to build solid foundations for stakeholders of the banana sector, regardless of their location and size, who are interested in initiating the design of low-carbon and sustainable water strategies, thereby improving their learning curve.

The manual is now available in Spanish here. It will also be available soon in English.

This activity was funded by the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) and produced in collaboration with several WBF partner organizations. The guide obtained the official endorsement of the Ministry of Environment (MINAE) and the Ministry of Agriculture (MAG) of Costa Rica, the latter declaring it of “national interest”. The country also obtained support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) to design the guidelines for a Low-Carbon Musaceae strategy for the country, thanks to the guide produced by the Project.

The production of the practical guide was the first phase of the project, which expects to include capacity building, validation and knowledge-sharing activities. Several calls for proposals are ongoing to fund the subsequent phases as well as to replicate and scale-up the project in other Latin American countries.

The WBF will not only promote and disseminate good practices in different regions based on this local experience, but will also foster multi-stakeholder dialogue and engage several public and private actors to promote climate resilience and tangible outcomes for the country.
