Dominican Republic: Leading Producer of Organic Bananas
The Dominican Republic is the world's largest producer of organic bananas, accounting for more than 55% of global organic banana production. Despite its relatively small role in the overall banana market, the country is the most significant supplier of organic bananas. This makes it a valuable case study for understanding common organic farming methods, their outcomes, and the challenges faced by producers transitioning to organic cultivation.
Banana production is concentrated in the Northwest provinces of Valverde and Monte Cristi, as well as the Southern provinces of Azua and Barahona.

- In 2015, the Dominican Republic had an estimated 12,000 hectares of organic banana plantations and exported over 240,000 metric tons, generating more than USD 150 million 1.

BANELINO was founded in 1996 and represents over 320 small-scale producers in Azua, Monte Cristi, and Valverde, located in the northwest of the Dominican Republic. About 95% of its exports originate from Monte Cristi and Valverde. The association promotes sustainable natural resource management, environmental conservation, and fair pricing to enhance the livelihoods of farming families and communities.
BANELINO produces approximately 85% organic bananas and contributes nearly 10% of the Dominican Republic’s banana sector, exporting 25,000 boxes per week. Around 90% of its producers operate small farms averaging 3.5 hectares, totaling over 1,200 hectares of cultivated land.
Actions performed by BANELINO organic producers include switching to certified and approved agrochemicals and clearing fields of invasive species, weeds, and pest hosts. They establish 10-meter-wide "streets" 90 meters from banana rows, integrating various fruit species with diverse root structures and foliage types to optimize soil use. Intercropping is common, with bananas grown alongside cocoa, citrus, mango, avocado, and guava.
Extensive cover crops such as Vigna (beans and legumes), Crotalaria (legumes and herbs), Canavalia (fodder and legumes), and Arachis (legumes) are planted during field establishment and throughout the growing season to enhance soil health and fertility.
Pest Control
Pests and diseases affecting organic banana plantations in the Dominican Republic include:
1. Common thrips (Frankliniella parvula) and red spot (Chaetanaphothrips orchidii)
Control: Use capsaicin, neem, garlic or cinnamon-based organic insecticides, saponified or potassium soaps, and saturated efficient microbes in the soil.
2. Weevils (Cosmopolites and Methamasius)
Control: Traps, or fungal entomopathogens Beauveria bassiana and Metharhizium anisopliae in certified organic commercial formulations.
3. Black Sigatoka4
Control: Removal of infested leaves, Melaleuca, citric acid, potassium, antagonistic microorganisms, and oils.
4. Pseudostem rot caused by Erwinia bacteria
Control: Applications of copper and antagonistic microorganisms to reduce impact.
5. Radolphus similis
Control: Soil organic matter management, flood irrigation, inoculation with microorganisms, or use of nematicides such as Paecilomyces spp.
Results
The practice of planting rows has led to the coexistence of multiple species, creating a sustainable system and achieving the following results:

✓ Improved soil quality through better moisture retention and temperature regulation.
✓ Greater water efficiency in irrigation.
✓ Increase in soil organic matter.

✓ Additional revenue from organically grown companion crops. In banana-cocoa systems, banana plants support cocoa pollination.
✓ Experiments with apiaries within plantations, utilizing planting "streets" for beehives to cultivate highly valued multifloral honey. Irrigation helps ensure flower availability year-round, making the environment ideal for beekeeping.
Challenges
Further studies are needed to assess, validate, and quantify the impact of organic production methods. Key areas requiring research include:
1. The effect of cover crops on biological control of thrips, as these crops support beneficial organisms that reduce thrip populations.
2. Improving conditions for entomopathogenic fungi reproduction to reduce weevil larvae and adult populations.
3. Enhancing soil health and microbial diversity to lower Sigatoka inoculum levels in infected leaves.
4. Reducing water stress by improving humidity retention, as water stress increases pathogen susceptibility.
5. Understanding the impact of root system diversity on nematode spread and assessing nematode populations.
6. Addressing climate change and extreme weather conditions, which significantly impact yields, soil health, and farmers' livelihoods.
