World Food Day

Better foods and a better future begin with food safety

Rome (Italy), 07/06/2025

This World Food Safety Day, on 7 June 2025, celebrates the important role that science plays in making informed decisions about food. Opportunities to get involved include sports activities, food safety quizzes, exhibitions and webinars!

Foodborne contaminants, ranging from bacteria to parasites, are responsible for at least 200 diseases. Protecting food safety is a shared responsibility, as the consequences of contamination impact not only public health but also economies and livelihoods around the world.

FAO and the World Health Organization (WHO) work together to facilitate the global observance of this important day. They bring together the most eminent independent scientists and experts to assess food safety hazards and provide unbiased, evidence-based advice to consumers, food businesses, and policymakers. This scientific input helps develop effective mechanisms to make food safer for all, while also underscoring the vital role of science in food safety.
