Nice (France), 09/06/2025 - 13/06/2025
The 2025 UN Ocean Conference, co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, will take place in Nice from 9–13 June under the theme "Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean." The Conference will bring together governments, the UN system, civil society, the private sector, and other stakeholders to assess progress on SDG 14.
FAO will be there to highlight the ocean as a vital, living ecosystem that nourishes people, provides jobs, and supports economies. Making ocean use sustainable is essential to ensure it can continue feeding and supporting future generations. FAO will take part in 60 events, co-organize 30, and lead two high-level sessions: one on the essential role of science, featuring the launch of the Review of the State of World Marine Fishery Resources, and another focused on youth as the next generation of ocean leaders driving sustainability and resilience.
The Director-General emphasized that FAO is engaged in multi-pronged initiatives in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. But he said that for real transformation to happen, the youth need to be not just included but empowered - not just as observers, but leaders, creators, and innovators, who are not just part of the transformation but are driving it.
