Korumdu (Kyrgyzstan), 23/06/2025 - 24/06/2025
FAO is playing a central role in advancing Kyrgyzstan’s efforts to build a robust, science-based biosafety framework. As part of the 80th anniversary celebrations and through a consultative workshop held from 23 to 24 June 2025 in Bulan‑Sogottu, Issyk‑Kul region, FAO brought together representatives from key ministries to align national actions with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. This initiative is part of a FAO-led project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), supporting the implementation of the country’s newly adopted Biological Safety Law.
FAO’s technical guidance and facilitation enabled critical discussions on GMO regulation, risk assessment procedures, liability, and public access to biosafety information. By helping national stakeholders identify legislative gaps and strengthen inter-agency coordination, FAO is directly contributing to the development of a transparent, resilient biosafety system in Kyrgyzstan—one that protects human health, preserves biodiversity, and reinforces the country’s commitment to international environmental agreements.
