On March 21, FAO marked the International Day of Forests with an educational experience for students in Rome’s Villa Doria Pamphilj Park. Together with FAO Forestry experts and Comune di Roma, students explored the Global Library of Trees and Flowers at FAO Park, learning about the vital role of forests for our planet.
To celebrate this year's theme, Forests and Foods , everyone enjoyed an assortment of international forest foods – acai, baobab fruit, nuts, berries, mushrooms, dried mopane worms, cocoa beans and more, while also discovering the crucial role of forests in food production. Youngsters also had the chance to taste the gelato made by the famous ice cream maker Eugenio Morrone who explained them how some of these ingredients are incorporated into his ice cream recipes.
A fun outdoor event to welcome spring and where the future stewards of the world’s forests learned about the connection between forests and food security, as well as the importance of balancing tradition and innovation to protect biodiversity.
