Zero Hunger Run promotes climate change education in Uganda

16/09/2016

Money raised by the Zero Hunger Run will fund an FAO project in northern Uganda that builds the capacities of secondary school teachers and students to cope with climate change. The project aims to improve nutrition, increase awareness about climate change and climate change adaptation practices and boost incomes.

A school garden will be established as a learning site  for production of ‘easy to manage’ crops, such as high value vegetables, and seeds will be distributed to 10 additional schools to set up their own gardens.  Teachers will also be trained by project staff and demonstrations on soil and water conservation, fertility enhancement, and technologies such as irrigation will be provided to students, who will replicate the practices back in their own school gardens.

In addition to providing important skills, the project will foster sustainability by promoting climate change adaptation practices beyond school doors to students’ households and local communities.
