ABSTRACT

Three workshops on Trickle Down Extension System (TDES) of 2 days duration each, were conducted at Rajshahi, Khulna and Dhaka Divisions during September and October 1992. Main objective of the workshops was to bring clarity among the participants about the concept of TDES. Progress and production performance made in fish culture by the Result Demonstration Fish Farmers (RDs) and problems encountered during operation have also been reviewed. Consequently these participatory workshops helped in improving functional design and the strategies of TDES by incorporating the recommendations made by the participants.

Three such workshops were organized at Bogra, Jessore and Mymensingh where a total number of 62 RDs and 100 Officers/Staff/Resource persons actively participated. Recommendations formulated during the workshops on different aspects of the TDES have properly been recorded in this report.

The TDES has been introduced in 34 Thanas of 10 Districts under 4 Divisions. During October 1990 to September 1992, the number of RDs increased from 156 to over 450. At present, a total number of 3552 Fellow Fish Farmers (FFs) are linked with 450 RDs.

The fish production rate in RDs pond increased from 980kg to 3373kg/ha/yr, 932kg to 3915kg/ha/yr and from 661kg to 3239kg/ha/yr in Rajshahi, Khulna and Dhaka Divisions respectively. The average benefit cost ratio of the beneficiaries (RDs) ranged from 1:1.94 to 1:3.85 in Rajshahi Division, 1:1.55 to 1:2.65 in Khulna Division and 1:1.48 to 1:3.80 in Dhaka Division. On the other hand, there was marked fall in the average production cost of fish. It came down from Tk.20.59 to Tk.8.69, Tk.21.98 to Tk.9.47 and Tk.28.00 to Tk.9.33 in Rajshahi, Khulna and Dhaka Divisions respectively.
