3. BREEDING HISTORY:

The Amur wild carp is an ancient form,that originated from the Asian carp centre (Amur-China type of wild carp, Cyprinius carpio haematopterus) and spread to the water bodies of Western Asia. During the centuries, after settling in the river Amur, this carp adapted to the local environmental conditions. It was brought into the gene bank of FCRI in 1982 from the Russian National Fisheries Research Institute. It has no breeding history as it is an ancient wild fish.

During the crossing experiments the P33×Amur wild hybrid gave outstanding results. The resulting hybrid, Szarvas P34 (See: page 62), is suitable for stocking natural waters for extensive fish production and angling.

In crossbreeding the Amur wild carp gave improved results in all other strains, except for the Tisza wild and the Fresinet carps. The Amur wild carp is characterised with an outstanding food conversion rate and excellent ability to utilise natural food. It has a relatively low fat content and its viability is also good. Stocking is recommended for lakes and water reservoirs for the purposes of sport fishing. Its body is elongated, thus it is an excellent sport fish as well as possessing other parameters needed for profitable production.

This Czech strain was developed in the Research Institute of Vodnany by Ing. Smisek after several years of selection. In this work the homozygous genotype for scaliness became fixed and the growth rate was also improved.

The production parameters of Czech scaly carp are favourable. Its fat content is lower than that of the Hungarian strain P3 (selected from Tata strain, see: page 75). Its food conversion rate is better than that of the Hungarian control variety, and the growth rate is only slightly lower than that of the Hungarian strain. Its viability is excellent, but the good viability occurring in these performance tests was not realised in the progeny. Stability of its constitution and stress tolerance are extremely good. At present it is maintained as a gene reserve, but it is planned for use in selection of a new variety requiring good stability of constitution and stress tolerance.

For the first introduction Czech mirror carp were collected from the fish farms Tabor (1972) and for the second from Trebon (1989) (Czech Republic). At these farms the characteristic form and features of the strain were reached by a continuous selection from the original strain of the region. This selection was directed for the growth rate and survival.

The fat content of the Czech mirror carp is lower than that of the Sz215 hybrid common carp, but its food conversion rate is worse. On occasion its growth rate proved to be better, but it could not be repeated continuously. Thus it was concluded that environmental factors have a strong influence on the genetic abilities of this fish. Compared to the other Hungarian varieties its viability proved to be worse as well. At present it is maintained as a gene reserve.

The Fresinet scaly carp has a twenty year breeding background at Nucet Research Station. The basic population of local scaly carp has been crossed with the Hungarian Szeged strain and selected after back crossing with the scaly carp. In its original breeding area it is used in intensive pond fish culture and in several crossing experiments.

The Fresinet scaly carp, on the basis of the tests carried out in Hungary, displays a lower survival rate compared with the SzP31 hybrid and the other examined strains. Its weight gain is also moderate. Crossing combinations with Vietnamese and Amur wild cross partners show usable heterosis effect in several quantitative traits. In its original habitat in commercial fishponds of the delta area of the River Danube (Romania) it displays an outstanding production capacity.

The German mirror carp has an average capacity of production compared with the three strains of common carp tested. Survival rate is fairly low considering its higher initial weight, but it has an outstanding growth rate among the other tested strains. In crossing experiments, as the maternal line in the N×01 combination, the hybrid displayed higher survival rate and in the 22×N combination the growth rate of hybrids was remarkable. As a maternal line of semi-gynogenetic hybrids, the growth rate of N×DG2 has better performance than the Szeged control population.

The Nasic mirror carp was developed at the Experimental Station of the University of Zagreb by selection in the local carp variety. Mirrored individuals were chosen and selection was continued in order to obtain a roundish body form and better production parameters. The Nasic strain is the result of these efforts.

The Nasic mirror carp is characterised by advantageous production parameters and through crossbreeding has improved native Hungarian strains. Its combination with the strain Sz22 and Hortobágy strain revealed heterosis in growth rate and survival. Its fat content is lower than that of the Szeged control strain and this feature occurred in the crossbreeding too. The fat ratio of meat of the progeny was decreased by two to three percent on average. Its food conversion rate is practically identical to that of other.

Compared to other varieties, it is sensitive to diseases and environmental changes, which results in a decrease in production parameters, first of all that of the growth rate. This sensitivity was successfully reduced by hybridisation, but to some extent this unfavourable feature occurred in the hybrid generations as well. It is still used for breeding and crossing, mostly for the purposes of blood refreshing for preventing inbreeding.

The Polish linear carp was developed from the local cultivated common carp strain that had been maintained by inbreeding over several generations. The family No. 11 comes from the crossbreeding of female line Z-102 Zator and the male line Z-105 Zator.

It is a long bodied fish with scales beside the lateral line. This form was not bred directly on the Zator Research Station, only the individuals that had scales beside the lateral line were selected from the bred population and maintained only for the conservation of genes. In performance tests it showed only a very slight improvement on the results of Szeged mirror strain.

Because of its phenotypic characteristics it is not preferred for production. In crossbreeding or pure breeding sometimes all the four possible forms of scaliness occurred from the genotype determining the lateral scaliness of progeny.

This strain was selected in the Ochabi Experimental Fish Farm of the Polish Academy of Sciences. It was selected for good growth rate. Its parental lines were collected from the watershed area of the upper Vistula River and from the Mazurian lakes. From the collected fish only the males were used, while the females came from the local (Golys) variety. The strain has been selected for five generations for improvement of growth rate.

The Polish mirror carp is a long bodied fish. Its productivity is moderate. As stronger improvement is not expected, it is not used for crossbreeding. It showed better results in growth rate than the standard control, Szeged strain. Its food conversion rate is rather poor and its slaughter value is also lower than that of Szeged control. Its fat content is also worse. Because of its poorer productivity it is maintained only as a gene reserve.

The strain is selected from the local population for growth rate and survival according to the plans of the local breeders. They arrived at the gene bank of Szarvas from the Romanian Fish Culture Research Centre in Nucet.

3. BREEDING HISTORY:

The Ropsha scaly carp has been selected from the local homozygote mirror carp by crossbreeding and at present is maintained in the homozygote scaly form. In the North-Russian region (St. Petersburg) the females of selected earlier origin Galician mirror carp were crossed with the males of the Amur wild carp. In the beginning, two parallel crossbreedings were carried out to eliminate inbreeding in later phases. The strain developed in this way and was selected for growth rate and homozygozity of scaliness over six generations. In these crossbreedings the female line R1 (Ropsha 1) and the male line R2 and their combination, the R12 were developed (Kirpichnikov, 1981).

The Ropsha Scaly carp strain is a cold tolerant strain. Its growth rate is good, but it did not show outstanding results in crossbreeding. It is maintained for the purpose of conservation of its genes. Because of its cold tolerance, the survival after the first winter is better than that of other common carp strains.

The Ukrainian carp was developed between 1970 and 1978 by selection of fish from the local population with the longest body shape together with good growth rate. The selected individuals were crossed with each other, thus the more significant features were standardised and its final character was reached. Later several Russian carp strains were used to improve the target traits of this strain.

The body shape of Ukrainian carp is elongated, but the ratio of characteristics to the wild forms is not shown. Its growth rate is satisfactory, but not extremely good. In crossbreeding experiments it was used to decrease the fat content, but the changes were not great enough for its further usage to be advisable.

31. VIETNAM SCALY CARP

3. BREEDING HISTORY:

The Vietnam scaly carp was selected from the local wild form of common carp (Cyprinus carpio viridiviolaceus). This common carp population was caught from natural waters in Vietnam and reproduced artificially. The offspring (F1 generation) of the original wild form were selected for growth rate, based on weight and later crossed with Hungarian and other Asian strains. The population of Vietnam scaly carp that arrived at the gene bank was from the F1 generation. This generation has maintained its wild character up to the present, for example its good natural food selection ability, good survival rate and low fat content of the meat.

The body shape of the Vietnam scaly carp is elongated and is characterised by a good growth rate. Its fat content is low. In crossbreeding it improved hypoxia tolerance and survival and decreased the fat content. It is a strain with good potential. Its further utilisation on its own or in crossbreeding is advised.
