Title:

"Observation of new hybrids of hazelnut"

Project Leader:

Participants:

Funding Institution:

University of Zagreb, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Pomology, Svetosimunska 25, 10 000 Zagreb, Croatia

Starting Date:

1989

Duration:

1999

Project Objectives:

Obtaining of new hazelnut cultivars with good fruit quality and without suckers.

Project Summary:

By the hybridization between cultivar `Istarski duguljasti' without suckers and Italian cultivars: `Tonda Romana', `Camponica' and `Nocchione' new hybrids were produced. Some of them have round-shaped fruit and are without suckers. During the war, the trial was interrupted for five years. After the war, examination of field trials revealed several hybrids with round-shaped fruit and without suckering.

Title:

"Behaviour of hazelnut cultivars on rootstock Corylus colurna in Istria"

Project Leader:

MILJKOVIC I.

Participants:

Funding Institution:

University of Zagreb, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Pomology, Svetosimunska 25, 10 000 Zagreb, Croatia

Starting Date:

1985

Duration:

2000

Project Objectives:

Determining of productivity and fruit quality of 17 hazelnut cultivars on rootstock Corylus colurna in ecological conditions of Istria.

Project Summary:

Drought periods during the growing season in Istria occur frequently, and there is no possibility for irrigation. Because of this, fruit drop is higher and kernel percentage is smaller. Rootstock Corylus colurna develops a large root system that is distributed deeper in the soil, so it has better resistance to drought. Besides, trees grafted on this rootstock are more vigorous. It is very important to determine the degree of compatibility for some cultivars and the influence of the rootstock on cultivar growth and productivity.

"Hazelnut breeding programme in order to obtain cultivars combining high and equable yields with good aptitudes for in-shell or shelled markets"

Funding Institution:

Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique, Unité de Recherches sur les Espéces Fruitiéres et la Vigne, Centre de Recherches de Bordeaux, BP 81, 33883 Villenave D'Ornon cedex, France

Starting Date:

1970

Duration:

30 years.

Project Objectives:

The majority of Turkish, Italian and Spanish varieties, which form the bulk of the world hazelnut production are either poorly adapted to mechanical harvesting and to single trunk cultivation, or low yielding under French climatic conditions. Furthermore, some of these varieties only have a medium kernel quality.

For twenty-five years INRA has carried out a large hybridization breeding programme. This programme was first set up for the creation of large fruited varieties for the in-shell market.

In the last ten years, it has been reoriented towards the creation of varieties for the shelled market. The latter requires small round nuts with high kernel percentage, producing uniform kernels with high flavour quality and ease of blanching.

Project Summary:

So far 150 crosses were made from parents of very diverse geographical origins and 5 600 hybrids were obtained. The study of these hybrids in selection plots is now completed. A new variety for in-shell market was released in 1987 under the name of `Fercoril-Corabel®'. It represents about half of the new plantations in France.

More than fifty other pre-selected hybrids are in assessment in different experimental orchards. Among them, two or three new varieties for shelled market and their poliinator will be released in the near future.

Considering the results already obtained, this hazelnut breeding programme is to be concluded in the next few years and no more crosses have been made since 1990.
