Title:

"Studies on selection of pollinator for main hazelnut types obtained by selection and determination of pollen quality of hazelnut varieties and types"

Project Leader:

KOÇ N.

Participants:

ÇALIŞKAN T.

Funding Institution:

Hazelnut Research Institute

Starting Date:

1987

Duration:

11 years

Project Objectives:

To determine the selection of hybrid hazelnut types with quality pollen and to identify a standard method to be used in pollen germination studies in order to provide a basis for selection of pollinator for main hazelnut types obtained by selection.

Project Summary:

20 % sugar concentrate, 18 hours germination period and agar - added saturated petri method has been suggested for pollen germination.

The pollinator types determined by selection have been subjected to a pre-screening by taking into account their staminate flower quantity, time and duration of male flowering, and pollen germination percentages. Selection and hybrid hazelnut types with quality pollen have been selected.

Studies are continuing on selection of pollinators for selected breeding types and for the varieties which are already being used in production

Project Leader:

ÇALIŞKAN N.

Participants:

Starting Date:

1992

Duration:

6 years

Project Objectives:

To examine the effects on yield and quality of compost from hazelnut husk and of application of husk compost to gardens together with farm manure and mineral fertilizers.

Project Summary:

It has been observed that application of fertilizers generally increases moisture, Ph, salinity, organic matter, phosphore, and potassium contents of the soil.

N-P-K levels in the leaves have changed with applications; no significant relationship has been observed between N-P-K levels and yield.

"Studies on propagation of hazelnut with layering methods"

Project Leader:

ÇALIŞKAN T.

Participants:

KOÇ N.

Funding Institution:

Hazelnut Research Institute

Starting Date:

1995

Duration:

3 years

Project Objectives:

To investigate effectiveness of propagation with layering method with a view to regenerate aged hazelnut plantations and to supply producers rapidly with the varieties developed through breeding.

Project Summary:

The study has been carried out on "Tombul" variety of hazelnut. In the tip layering technique, both rooting rates and root capacities have been found to be high. It is possible to establish an orchard with the seedlings thus obtained without any need for additional maintenance works.

In the Common and Chinese layering methods, rooting rates and root capacities are lower.

It is thought that the tip layering method may be used for commercial production of hazelnuts.

Project Objectives:

To survey, collect, maintain and evaluate the local or developed varieties and wild species in Turkey, to record the related information and put them at the disposal of researchers.

Project Summary:

The 520 types and varieties determined by selection studies carried out since 1969 mainly in the Earthern Black Sea region have been evaluated pomologically and from the standpoint of their other characteristics, and subjected to a pre-screening.

The hazelnut genetic material is formed by adding 17 standard hazelnut varieties to examine them from the standpoint of their various characteristics, and they have been recorded in the data bank. These varieties have been collected together at the Hazelnut Research Institute, and a "Hazelnut Variety Collection Plot" has been established.

At present, surveying activities are continuing, local varieties in various regions are being evaluated, and are included in the variety collection plot.

Project Objectives:

To obtain quality and large-fruited hazelnut varieties by breeding through hybridization.

Project Summary:

Crossbreeding combinations were established between the hazelnut varieties called `Tombul' and `Kargalak', and selection studies were made. So far, 10 types showing superior characteristics from the standpoint of quality and yield have been developed. In the coming years, it will be possible to supply producers with their seedlings.

To examine throughout a year carbohydrate quantities and changes in some hazelnut varieties grown in Turkey in regions with different ecological conditions, and to identify the ecological differences between the regions.

Project Summary:

Carbohydrate levels have been determined with enymatic method and HPLC method in bark samples obtained from the trunks of ocak's of hazelnut varieties existing in identified gardens in the Eastern and Western Black Sea regions.

First-year studies have been completed, and year-long changes in carbohydrate levels have been determined for different hazelnut varieties grown under different ecological conditions. Gathering of samples for the second year is continuing. Yield levels of ocak's have been observed in these years as well.
