FOREWORD

The following selected working papers were written by individual experts to form the basis for the deliberations of the meeting of the FAO Panel of Experts on Ecological and Technical Aspects of the Programme for the Control of African Animal Trypanosomiasis and Related Development. The quality of these papers is such that they are published here, in full, in the original language, in the hope that they will prove useful to other workers in the specialised field of Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Control and Related Development. The views expressed are those of the authors, to whom any queries should be directed, and are not necessarily those of FAO.

The Organization is extremely grateful to all those who participated in the Panel meeting and contributed to its success.

These proceedings are dedicated to the memory of our colleague Dr. André van der Vloedt who regretfully passed away on 31 December, 1991, very soon after completing a field mission to East Africa. André's last written contribution to the field of tsetse control is the working paper on the “Integration of Biological Techniques into Tsetse Control Programmes” as published in these Proceedings.

All of those who knew André were impressed by his sincerity and dedication to tsetse control. He is sadly missed by us all.
