MAURITANIA:

Plantings have started following first significant rains in mid or late June. Following scattered light rains in late May and early June in the south-east, more significant rains reached the south of the country during the second dekad of June. On 29 June, the main meteorological stations of the producing areas registered rains ranging from 1 mm to 45 mm (in Aleg). Precipitation decreased in the south-west in early July but remained widespread in the south-east. Land preparation is underway and first plantings have started in the south and the south-east in several areas of Assaba, Guidimaka, Gorgol areas and in the two Hodhs. Substantial dry pastures are remaining from last years season.

Isolated Desert Locust adults were seen during surveys in the extreme south in the first dekad of June. During the second half of June, additional infestations were seen in the south-est near Aleg and in southern Trarza. Small numbers of adults will survive in the southern regions, continue to mature and lay with the onset of the rainy season. As a result, hatching is likely to start during July. Although infestations may gradually build up during the summer, initial populations are expected to be rather dispersed. A few adults may be present in some areas of recent rains in the north.
