MALI:

Coarse grains are emerging in the south. Plantings are underway in the north. Following regular rains in the south in mid and late May, plantings started in late May in the south. Precipitation decreased in early June but progressed northwards, allowing plantings to start in the sahelian zone. Rains resumed in the south in mid and late June but were often localized. They remained widespread in early July. Seed availability is satisfactory. Coarse grains are emerging in the south in Sikasso region and south of Koulikoro. Rice is still in seedbeds. Plantings are underway in the north. Pastures are regenerating in the south and the centre. They remain poor in the north.

Several Desert Locust adults and swarms have been reported in May in the north. By the end of the month and in early June, gregarious hoppers were found in the Tessalit area, but numbers appeared to decrease rapidly due to drier conditions and strong winds. No locusts were reported along the Tilemsi Valley as far as Gao and in the eastern part of the Timetrine area in the Adrar des Iforas in mid-June. Groups of adults and a few small swarms are expected to arrive from the north during July. As conditions are becoming favourable in several wadis in the Tilemsi Valley, maturation and laying will occur. Infestations will be dispersed and difficult to detect at the beginning of the summer. A similar situation could develop in Tamesna if rainfall occurs.
