2. SCOPE OF REPORT

Since its establishment in 1975 the site of Naduruloulou Research Station (NRS)2 has been inundated by the River Rewa several times. In addition, some of the facilities are outworn and in need of rehabilitation, while others have insufficient capacity to satisfy the requirements derived from production target figures set for the near future. Relocation of NRS is, therefore, being considered as an option to remove all burdens to safe operation.

The primary aim of the present report is to assess the constrains of NRS and to determine whether its proposed relocation is justified.

The report also aims to analyse the functions of NRS, and to identify those functions which should be transferred to the new research station, once relocation has taken place.

The third main aim is to identify the applicable technology and production goals for the new research centre, and to present appropriate details on its engineering set-up. These will enable the competent authorities of Fiji to make further decisions on investment and to raise funds for implementation. Furthermore, an analysis of options for future utilisation of the present NRS site is also presented.

The report makes a proposal on site selection for the new research centre. Since there is no tradition of aquaculture engineering in Fiji, aquaculture engineering aspects of the issues have been given more explanations in the presentation of findings.

2 Although the Terms of Reference refers to Naduruloulou Freshwater Aquaculture Centre, the designation above is officially used by fisheries officials. The locally applied name and abbreviation is, therefore, used hereinafter in the report.
