5. ANNELIDA

Arenicola cristata (Stimpson)

Lugworm. (Arenicolidae). Marine waters. Atlantic, Gulf and Pacific Coast of U.S.A. Cultivated on experimental scale in Florida. Good bait for a number of fishes. After hatching the worm feeds on mixed organic detritus in sediments. Rapid growth, tolerance to low D.O. and crowding, and sedentary habit are significant characters.

Lugworms (species not reported) cultivated in U.S.S.R. also for feeding sturgeon and in the U.S.A. for feeding aquarium fish.

Enchytraeus albidus (?)

(Enchytraeidae). An oligochaete, artificially cultivated in wooden trays, in air conditioned rooms, in U.S.S.R. Breed throughout the year. Stored at -1 to +1°C to feed sturgeon larvae.
