Review of Research Cruises in the Study Area

90. Demersal surveys in the study area started in the mid-1960s and involved Soviet cruises and those of FAO using the R.V. Fritdjof Nansen. Both East and West Germany undertook cruises, the East Germans in Mozambique waters where attention also focused on deepwater prawns. Results in general showed that resources were limited and would not sustain heavy fishing. Surveys were also undertaken in Kenyan waters. In South Africa surveys were undertaken of (Patagonian toothfish) resources in the Prince Edward Island region. In the Seychelles, research cruises were undertaken in the 1970s and the 1990s (Shoals of Capricorn and Mascarene Ridge). At present there is little survey activity in the region but new proposals are expected. It was noted that Korea was reported to have undertaken some survey fishing in the area in 2001 when a reported 1 600 kg of orange roughy were caught. A different research vessel is reported to be operating in 2002, targeting orange roughy.
