APPENDIX II
IDENTIFICATION OF HEMIPTERA

Only two species of Hemiptera have been reported to destroy Prosopis seeds. Both were reported from the south-western United States but undoubtedly more species of Hemiptera will be found to feed on seeds of Prosopis from throughout its range.

The two species are easily separated because they are in distinctly different families. Chlorochroa ligata (Say) is in the family Pentatomidae which has five antennal segments. Mozena obtusa Uhler is in the family Coreidae and has four antennal segments. Chlorochroa ligata is a large, dark, olive green bug 15 mm long, with the tip of the scutellum and a narrow marginal border orange or reddish. This species may be a serious pest of cotton bolls in Texas. Mozena obtusa is also large (about 15 mm long) and dark, but is dark chocolate brown with pale yellow spots. It is also more elongate than C. ligata.
