About the editors

Dr Tim L. Wentling is the Grayce Wicall Gauthier Professor of Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His endowed professorship is focused on economic and corporate education. Dr Wentling holds M.B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois. Dr Wentling has combined his education and business expertise to address relevant problems of education and training in the private as well as in the public sector and government. Prior to joining the University of Illinois faculty, Dr Wentling was a professor at the University of Minnesota.

Professor Wentling has published over 40 journal articles and eight books. His writing has focused on the improvement of training programmes through systematic evaluation and curriculum design. He has also been heavily involved in the use of technology to deliver and improve training. Several of his most notable books are Teacher preparation in vocational education (1996), Introduction to microcomputer technologies (1996), A trainer's guide to curriculum development (1993), Training evaluation (1992), and Measuring student growth: Techniques and procedures (1988).

Dr. Wentling has been an active consultant, applying his skills to the improvement of education and training programmes. He has worked for a variety of companies and has led the design and implementation of many programmes and evaluations. Recent clients include: Caterpillar, Inc., Unisys Corporation, Quaker Oats Company, General Motors, Continental Telephone Company, and Motorola. Professor Wentling has also applied his expertise to international settings serving for agencies such as FAO and the World Bank, working in Italy, Viet Nam, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Nepal, and China.

Dr Ronny Adhikarya is a senior training officer at the Knowledge Products and Outreach Division (WBIKP) of the World Bank, in Washington DC, USA. Prior to joining the World Bank, he served for 15 years at FAO, Rome, Italy, as a senior-level specialist in charge of extension, education, and methodologies. During his assignment with FAO, he worked with a wide network of training/educational institutions and development specialists in many developing countries where he was involved in training, education, and communication programmes in the areas of sustainable agricultural development, environment, population, health/AIDS, etc. Dr Adhikarya was the planner, manager and coordinator of FAO/SDRE's EET activities which are reported in this book. He also pioneered FAO's electronic publishing activities and advocated the application of microcomputer technologies in AET.

Dr Adhikarya received his master's degree in 1972 from Cornell University and obtained his Ph.D. degree in communication from Stanford University, USA. He served as staff researcher and fellow at the East-West Communication Institute, Hawaii; Visiting Professor at the Science University. of Malaysia; research staff at the Institute for Research, Stanford University, and also as consultant to various UN and other international agencies. During his 27-year career in international development, Dr Adhikarya has worked and/or resided in 37 countries worldwide. Originally from Indonesia, he was an award-winning journalist in that country before he started his international development career. He has written eight books (one of which is available in electronic/PDF computer and CD-ROM versions) on communication and extension/non-formal education subjects published in Germany, Italy, UK, United States, Singapore and Malaysia.

Dr Chye-Hean Teoh is presently the Coordinator, Field Attachment Programme at the Faculty of Agriculture, Luyengo Campus, University of Swaziland. Prior to joining the University of Swaziland in 1998, he served since 1986 as an extension and training consultant to FAO and the Australian Development Assistance Bureau, focusing on training, institutional development, curriculum design and training module development, training needs assessment, programme development and the training of trainers.

Dr Teoh's principal areas of expertise are training module development processes and strategies, multimedia instructional materials for extension training and tailoring curricula and programmes to the occupational needs of persons and institutions. He has been extensively involved in FAO-sponsored projects in environment and population education and training in various countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. His international experience includes consultancy in the Philippines, China, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand, Ethiopia, the Solomon Islands, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Dr Teoh holds a B.Sc. in agricultural economics from the University of Malaysia and an M.Sc. in agricultural education from the UPLB. He received his Ph.D. in agricultural and occupational education from Cornell University, New York, United States.
