V STAKEHOLDERS'VIEWS IN COUNTRIES VISITED
Throughout the mission, the study team
solicited stakeholders' views about the implementation of the respective
national codes of practice and RIL, and asked for suggestions for improvements.
Many stakeholders
felt the need to specifically discuss the role of regional organisations.
Suggestions included the following:
- encourage and facilitate the exchange of information,
technologies and lessons learnt among ASEAN Member Countries (especially regarding
international and domestic timber prices, growth and yield data of forest
stands, and forest certification schemes);
- vigorously
fight illegal logging and the illegal timber trade;
- promote the use of more locally adapted logging
technologies throughout ASEAN Member Countries;
- facilitate
region-wide training of
trainers, conduct exchange
visits, and host
international seminars/conferences on the development and
implementation of national codes of practice for forest harvesting;
- establish a forum or "community of practice" in
support of code implementation; and
- facilitate the establishment of a Pan ASEAN timber
certification scheme.
