Importance of agriculture to the economy

Agriculture accounts for 40% of the GDP and 70% of the economically active population. The agricultural sector is comprised predominantly of subsistence farmers who account for 95% of agricultural production. Principal cash crops are cotton (63.7% of export earnings in 1989) and oil palm. Food crops include yams, cassava and maize.
