THE RURAL DEVELOPMENT INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP, held at the University of Agricultural Sciences in Gödöllö, Hungary in the spring of 1996, offered the unique opportunity for participants to learn about post-cold war rural development strategies in 15 different countries and regions of the world as well as to participate in three days of round table workshops. The round tables dealt with three main topics identified by FAO:
Managing access to natural resources, Managing institutions and Managing anti-poverty programmes. The participants were international experts mainly from developing countries and most were under the age of 40. They came together, invited by FAO, in a spirit of international cooperation, with the goal of learning from each other.
This book contains the 15 case studies that were presented during the workshop, as well as reports and summaries prepared by the participants of the round table discussions. It also contains the workshop conclusions that were compiled from the plenary discussions held at the end of each day. It offers a unique global view of changes that have taken place in the developing world since the end of the cold war, as well as a look at the international reaction to some of those changes.
