FRY TO FINGERLING PRODUCTION

HOW TO START

The total procedure again can conveniently be divided into three sequential steps.

• Pre-stocking or pond preparation
• Stocking
• Post stocking measures

POND PREPARATION

Prepare the rearing pond same way as nursery pond

• Dewater and dry the pond. If required repair the dykesand level the bottom.
• Cut the overgrown grasses of dykes and trim the branches of the trees over-casting the pond.
• Remove all types of aquatic weeds.
• Eradicate all the existing stock of fish including predatory and weed fishes.
• Apply lime followed by manure
• Test the toxicity of the water in case the pond was poisoned.
• Examine the availability of fish food organisms in the pond.
• Rake the pond bottom to remove the marshy gasses and aerate the bottom sediment.

Application of insecticide is not required

STOCKING

Remember the following:

  1. Although one or more species of fry can be reared together, the best result comes from monospecies rearing.

  2. In case of multispecies rearing of fry, compatibility of species should be considered.

  3. Use lower stocking density in case bigger size fingerling is required within short period of rearing.

  4. Use healthy and disease free fry for fingerling rearing.

STOCKING DENSITY AND RATIO

Rearing period will vary from 30 – 40 days

Target size - 10 cm (10g)

METHOD OF STOCKING

Like stocking of spawn, release the fry only after equalizing the water temperature with pond water temperature.

POST-STOCKING MEASURES

1. Manuring

Follow the daily manuring schedule as below:

MANUREQUANTITY (DAILY)
PER DECIMALPER BIGHA
Fresh Cowdung or Poultry droppings240 – 250 gm
120 – 125 gm
8 kg
4 – 5 kg
Urea4 – 5 gm150 – 200 gm
T.S.P3 gm100 gm

All three manures properly mixed in 3 times of water, stayed overnight and sprayed to pond surface in the morning at about 9 or 10 O'clock.

Suspend manuring during rainy/cloudy days

2. Feeding

Apply feed on daily basis as per the weight of the total stock

Stick to feeding schedule as per the following table

3. Bottom raking

Rake the bottom daily in the morning after stocking.

4. Sampling

Sample to examine the health, growth and survival status of the stock.

5. Cleaning the pond site

Periodically trim the branches of the trees over-casting the pond and remove all types of aquatic weeds.

6. Harvesting and sale

If properly managed, fingerling will grow to 10 cm (10g) within 30–40 days. Adjust harvesting as per demand.
