Pigs have an important social role in most Southeast Asian countries. They figure throughout rural society, providing a source of meat, fat, manure and income and serving as the object of business transactions. This article is a brief sketch of swine production in Viet Nam. It focuses on family pig keeping and the breeds in use, including points on productivity and reproduction as well as comments on the future of the sector.
In Viet Nam, family swine production accounts for 80 to 90 percent of the national output and is an important source of income for the family unit, which uses several local breeds.
